Royal Palace of Caserta from Naples: costs and timings in brief

The Royal Palace of Caserta from Naples is the easiest day trip to do by train: the regional train from Napoli Centrale takes 40–50 minutes and drops you opposite the gate. On your own you spend €27 per person: €4 for the train each way (Campania regional fare, unicocampania.it) plus €18 for the full ticket according to the official website reggiadicaserta.cultura.gov.it, €19 online.

Partner tickets with priority access start at €20, guided tours from €38, and packages with a shuttle from Naples cost €120 (prices checked regularly).

The critical point isn’t the cost but the time: Vanvitelli’s palace is one of the largest royal residences in Europe, with more than 1,200 rooms and a park about 3 km long. Apartments, Park and English Garden together need the whole day. And never on a Tuesday: it’s closed.

How to get to the Royal Palace of Caserta on your own

1. Station: Napoli Centrale, Trenitalia regional trains bound for Caserta or passing through it (towards Benevento, Campobasso, Rome via Cassino). Check that “Caserta” is on the route: not all northbound regional trains stop there.
2. Ticket: single journey €4.00, Campania regional fare (zone NA4 on unicocampania.it, same amount on the Trenitalia website). Buy online, on the app or at the machines; if it’s a paper ticket, validate it. A digital regional ticket is valid only for the train you chose.
3. Journey time: 40–50 minutes according to the services published by Trenitalia, usually with one or two intermediate stops. At weekday peak times the trains are packed with students and commuters: leave Naples between 8:30 and 9:30 and come back after 6 pm.
4. From the station: leave on the piazza Carlo di Borbone side and cross the square: you’re at the central gate in 2 minutes. It’s the compulsory entrance even for Campania Artecard holders, with a check at the Infopoint.
5. Return: regional trains to Naples are frequent until the evening; last entry to the palace is at 6 pm, so you won’t need late services.

High-speed trains: some Frecce and Italo services stop at Caserta, but from Naples the regional train is cheaper and no less comfortable. It only makes sense if you’re coming directly from Rome: in that case Caserta is one stop before Naples, and you can visit it on the day you arrive.

Reggia Express: on certain dates the Fondazione FS runs a heritage train Naples–Caserta with carriages from the 1930s and 1950s, promoted by the palace as a slow alternative (24 km route). In the Fondazione FS calendar the dates are few (a handful of autumn Sundays, published each year): departure from Napoli Centrale at 10:00, arrival in Caserta 10:35, return at 17:30; €5 each way for adults, €2.50 for ages 4 to 12, on sale through Trenitalia channels. For any ordinary Saturday, count on the regional train.

By car: A1 motorway, Caserta Sud exit, then paid car parks around piazza Carlo di Borbone. On spring weekends you’ll circle for a long time: the train avoids the problem.

What to see: Apartments, Park, English Garden

Royal Apartments (2.5 hours according to the palace). The grand staircase, the Palatine Chapel, the Throne Rooms and the rooms of Ferdinand II, the Picture Gallery, the royal nativity scene. The Court Theatre opens only on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 to 1 pm thanks to Touring Club volunteers, closed on free days; the Gran Galleria hosts temporary exhibitions included in the ticket. When short-staffed, the palace warns, some rooms may remain closed.

Royal Park: a 3 km perspective axis from behind the palace up to the Great Waterfall, with the Old Wood and the Way of Water: the fountains of the Dolphins, of Aeolus, of Ceres, of Venus and Adonis and, at the top, Diana and Actaeon. On foot it’s 40 minutes uphill; the electric shuttle (€3 return) and bike hire (€5 an hour) cut the time.

English Garden: to the right of the Waterfall, commissioned by Maria Carolina of Austria, with the Bath of Venus, the mock ruins and the greenhouses. It’s the most beautiful part of the complex and the one with the shortest hours: last entry at 5 pm in summer, earlier in the other months. If you want to see it, start from the Park and not from the Apartments.

How much time to allow

Recommended order with the full ticket: arrive at 9, Park and English Garden first (while your legs hold up and the Garden is open), lunch, Apartments in the afternoon, when the light from the windows is better and the groups have left.

When to go and what to avoid

• April–September: long hours (Apartments until 19:15), fountains running, English Garden in bloom. From June to August the Park’s avenue has no shade: do it in the morning.
• October–March: reduced hours, which change month by month; check the official table before buying. The Park in autumn with its yellow plane trees is worth the trip.
• Tuesday: closed. If you’re in Naples from Monday to Wednesday, Caserta has to be done on the Monday or the Wednesday.
• Free museum Sundays and free days: free entry, but the English Garden, the Vanvitelli and Amelio Rooms, the Gran Galleria and the Court Theatre are closed and there are crowds on the staircase. A good deal for the Park alone, not for the full visit.
• Spring long weekends: tickets are capped per time slot; book online a few days ahead.

Tickets: official versus partners

Official ticket office. In piazza Carlo di Borbone, open 8:30–18:00, or online (TicketOne platform indicated by the website) with a €1 booking fee. Options:

Discounts: €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 24, €7 with the Campania Artecard (after the free entries), free for under-18s and for people with disabilities with a companion. Tickets are capped, non-refundable and cannot be changed.

Partners. The skip-the-line ticket on Headout costs €20, that is €1 more than the official online price, and offers booking in your own language and customer support; with a digital audio guide it goes up to €29.90–35. The queue you skip is the ticket-office one, which on normal days is short: the real advantage is buying in two minutes without registering on TicketOne.

Guided tour with entry. From €38 to €45 for 2–3 hours with a guide in the Apartments (and partly in the Park, depending on the version), ticket included: subtracting the €18 entry, the guide costs you €20–27. The tour with priority entrance from Naples at €72 lasts 4 hours and includes an escort; the exact meeting point is on the voucher.

From Naples with transport. The guided tour with ticket and transfer costs €120 per person (5 hours); the Headout package with return shuttle is €120 per group, not per person, and becomes interesting from three people upwards. Against €8 for a return train ticket, the difference is only justified if the train is genuinely a problem.

Mistakes to avoid at the Royal Palace of Caserta

• Turning up on a Tuesday. It’s the most common mistake and there’s no fixing it: the palace is closed, and the town of Caserta without the palace isn’t worth the journey.
• Starting with the Apartments on a full ticket. The English Garden closes an hour before the Park and two before the palace: those who enter the Apartments at 2 pm often find the Garden closed when they come out.
• Buying the Apartments-only ticket on a day when the Park is open. The official website only allows it when the Park or the Garden are closed: you won’t find it online and at the ticket office they’ll offer you the full one.
• Choosing a free museum Sunday for your first visit. Free, but with the English Garden, the Vanvitelli and Amelio Rooms, the Gran Galleria and the Court Theatre closed.
• Underestimating the distances. From the gate to the Waterfall it’s 3 km, with little shade: water, hat and comfortable shoes even in October.
• Not checking the monthly calendar. Outside summer the Park’s hours change every month; read the official table before buying a non-refundable ticket.

What to combine with Caserta

• Casertavecchia: the medieval village on the hill, 10 km from the palace, with its Norman cathedral; by bus or taxi, suited to those staying overnight.
• San Leucio: the Belvedere and the Bourbon silk works, 4 km north, with a separate ticket: €7 full price, €4 reduced, guided visits only at fixed times (9:30, 10:45, 12:00 and two afternoon slots), closed on Wednesday afternoons, according to belvederedisanleucio.it.
