Veiled Christ: why this ticket comes before everything else

Giuseppe Sanmartino’s Veiled Christ (1753) is the most sought-after statue in Naples and it stands in a private, single-nave chapel, the Sansevero Chapel, which has set a cap on daily entries to protect the works. The consequence is simple: booking is mandatory, tickets go online 60 days ahead, and at weekends, over long weekends and from Easter to October the best time slots vanish days or weeks in advance. There is no queue at the door to slip into.

The standard ticket on the official site museosansevero.it costs €12; guided tours with entry on the partner platforms cost €14–15 (prices checked regularly) and in practice they are a second way in when the official site says “sold out”. Hours, closing day and special openings

The chapel opens every day from 9am to 7pm, with last entry half an hour before closing, and closes on Tuesdays. The official calendar, however, adds exceptions in both directions: special Tuesday openings (6 January, 17 February, 28 April, 2 June, every Tuesday in August, 3 November, 8 December) and extended hours until 8:30pm on long weekends (the first days of January, Easter, 25 April, 1 and 2 May, 30 May–1 June, 31 October–2 November, 5–7 December). Closed on 25 December, plus any extraordinary closures announced in the official calendar; on 24 December it opens only from 9am to 2pm.

If you have a single day in Naples and it happens to fall on a Tuesday, check the calendar before writing the visit off; if it falls on a long weekend, the evening slots at 7–8pm are the ones that stay free longest.

Official prices and concessions

According to the official site (museosansevero.it):

The museum is private and receives no public funding: there is no free Sunday as at the state museums, and the Campania Artecard does not include it among its entries (it does not appear in the lists of participating sites on campaniartecard.it). The e-ticket is shown directly at the entrance, without going through the ticket office; it is valid only for the date chosen and is neither refundable nor changeable under any circumstances. If your plans change, the ticket is lost.

What you see inside the Sansevero Chapel

The chapel is small and can be taken in at a glance from the door, but every piece has a story tied to Raimondo di Sangro, seventh Prince of Sansevero, who in the mid-eighteenth century turned it into his manifesto. At the centre the Veiled Christ: a single block of marble in which the veil clings to the body, along with the legend, disproved by the documents, that the prince had “marbled” a real veil by some alchemical process.

Along the walls are the ten statues of the Virtues dedicated to members of his family. The two not to miss are Antonio Corradini’s Modesty, another veiled figure, dedicated to the mother who died when the prince was less than a year old, and Francesco Queirolo’s Disillusion, a man freeing himself from a net carved mesh by mesh, dedicated to his father. Above, the vault frescoed with the Glory of Paradise; underfoot, what remains of the labyrinth floor; at the far end, the tomb of Raimondo di Sangro.

A narrow eighteenth-century spiral staircase leads down to the underground chamber with the Anatomical Machines: two skeletons, a man and a woman, with the arterial and venous system reconstructed down to the finest vessels in beeswax and other materials, the work of the Palermo physician Giuseppe Salerno (c. 1756–64). The chamber is not wheelchair-accessible; the rest of the museum is. The bookshop is in the sacristy.

How much time you need and which time slot to choose

The museum does not impose a duration: from a few minutes to over an hour, says the site. In practice, 20 minutes is enough to see everything once, 45 with the audio guide or a guide, an hour if you want to wait for the group in front of the Christ to move on. When it is crowded the staff ask groups not to linger.

The best slot is the first one at 9am: you enter with the light coming through the high windows and fewer people in front of the statue. The mid-morning slots at weekends are the first to sell out. Anyone arriving late for their chosen slot risks not getting in: turn up 10 minutes early with the ticket on your phone.

The rules: no photos, no phones

Inside the Sansevero Chapel it is forbidden to photograph, film or use a mobile phone; it is forbidden to touch the works or bring in food, drink or animals. The photo ban is real and enforced: it is not the usual rule that everyone ignores. Bear in mind that high-resolution images are in the official digital catalogue, which is worth more than any stolen snap. Large backpacks and bulky bags: the official site publishes no rules and mentions no cloakroom, so travel light and ask at the entrance.

Official ticket, guided tour or audio guide: which to choose

Three roads lead to the Veiled Christ.

Official ticket at €12. The right choice if you book at least one to two weeks ahead in low season and three to four over long weekends. You pick the date and the slot, pay by card or MyBank, and receive the PDF. Add the audio guide for €3.50 (25 minutes, in Italian, English, French, Spanish and German): you collect it inside the museum, not at the ticket office.

Partner guided tour at €14–15. A licensed guide goes in with you (a maximum of 9 people per guide, apart from groups booked on the dedicated platform) and in 35 minutes explains the statues, the symbols and the anatomical machines. It costs €2–3 more than the ticket and has two concrete advantages: the operators block slots in advance, so you find a place on dates when the official site is sold out, and you get the explanation that, in a chapel with no lengthy panels, you would otherwise miss. Guided visits organised by the museum itself run only on certain days, usually Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

Partner ticket with audio guide at €25. It includes entry, an escort and a multilingual audio guide: it costs €10 more than the guided tour and only makes sense if you want the commentary in your own language and there is nothing else available on your date.

The exact meeting point for the tour is on the voucher: usually in piazza San Domenico Maggiore or in front of the chapel, a minute from the entrance on via De Sanctis. Check the language of the tour before booking: departures in Italian are less frequent than those in English.

How to get to the Sansevero Chapel

The entrance is at via Francesco De Sanctis 19/21, an alley behind piazza San Domenico Maggiore, on Spaccanapoli. According to the official site, by public transport you end up with a 5–10 minute walk in every case:

• Metro Line 1: Dante station (then via Port’Alba and piazza Bellini, downhill) or Università (uphill along via Mezzocannone).
• Metro Line 2: Cavour station, then via Duomo and via dei Tribunali.
• Bus: 151 and tram 41 to the via Nuova Marina stop, R2 and trolleybus 202 to the corso Umberto stop, 154 to the Marchese Campodisola stop.
• From the airport: Alibus to the Molo Beverello terminus and from there a 15-minute walk, or Line 1 from Municipio to Università.

What to combine: Santa Chiara, Napoli Sotterranea, MANN

Everything around the chapel is within walking distance. The Cloister of Santa Chiara, with its eighteenth-century majolica, is 5 minutes away: open Monday–Saturday 9:30am–5pm and Sundays 10am–2pm, ticket €7 full, €5 reduced for over 65s, university students and under 30s, €4 for ages 7 to 17, free under 7; tickets are sold only at the complex’s ticket office, with no booking and no third-party vouchers (data from monasterodisantachiara.it). A combined partner tour bundles Sansevero, the cloister and a guided walk through the historic centre into two and a half hours for €48.50: it is only worth it if you want a guide for the whole morning, because the two official tickets together cost €19.

The Cathedral and the Chapel of the Treasure of San Gennaro are on via Duomo (you will find them in palaces, castles and churches of Naples). A programme that works: Sansevero at 9am, Santa Chiara at 10am, Napoli Sotterranea at 12pm, lunch on via dei Tribunali, MANN in the afternoon. Mistakes to avoid

• Booking the flight or the train and “sorting out” the Veiled Christ later: the slots run out before the hotels do.
• Buying for the wrong date: no changes, no refunds, on the official site and, as a rule, on the partner platforms within the last 24 hours.
• Arriving on a Tuesday without having read the calendar of special openings.
• Counting on the allocation of tickets released two days ahead: it exists, but it is small and goes in minutes at peak times.
• Searching for “Cappella Sansevero” on Google Maps and ending up at the church of San Domenico Maggiore: the entrance is in the alley behind, via De Sanctis.

Choose your date, open the official site and take the €12 slot if there is one, ideally at 9am.
