Vesuvius from Naples: how much it costs and how long it takes

Climbing Mount Vesuvius from Naples is a half-day trip: 4–5 hours door to door, about 2 of them in the Park. The minimum DIY cost is the Gran Cono ticket (€10 full price plus fees, €11.68 on Vivaticket according to the official website parconazionaledelvesuvio.it) plus €2.60 each way on the Circumvesuviana and €12–15 for the return shuttle from Ercolano Scavi: about €29–32 in total. A transfer from Naples with entry included starts at €33.15; a guided tour from €41; Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day from €48.75 (prices checked regularly).

The thing that changes everything compared with a few years ago: the ticket is sold online only, with a 10-minute time slot. There is no ticket office at the gate. Anyone who turns up without a ticket in August goes back down without having seen the crater. The rest of this page is here to keep you out of that situation.

How to get to Vesuvius on your own

From Ercolano Scavi by shuttle (the shortest way)

1. Circumvesuviana Naples–Sorrento line from Porta Nolana or Garibaldi, get off at Ercolano Scavi: about 20 minutes, €2.60 for a single journey (regional fare zone 2, unicocampania.it). Trains are frequent; the Naples–Poggiomarino line also stops at Ercolano.
2. In the square in front of the station you’ll find the Vesuvio Express desk, the cooperative that runs the shuttle to the 1,000 m car park: 30 minutes of uphill road. In summer departures run from 9:00 to 17:00, in winter from 9:30 to 14:00 (vesuvioexpress.it). Return fare: €12 on promotion, €15 full price, without the crater ticket; the shuttle + entry package costs €30 on the official shop.
3. Buy the shuttle after you’ve fixed your Gran Cono slot: the shuttle gives you about 2 hours to go up and come down, so choose a departure that gets you up there 30–60 minutes before the time printed on your ticket.

The automatic gate accepts your QR code from 120 minutes before to 120 minutes after your slot time, within closing hours. This flexibility covers any train delays.

From Pompeii on EAV bus 808

If you’re combining Pompeii and Vesuvius, EAV line 808 Pompeii–Vesuvius (timetable in force, eavsrl.it) leaves from Piazza Anfiteatro and stops 5 minutes later at Villa dei Misteri, next to Pompei Scavi station. Eleven departures a day between 8:30 and 16:30, about 50 minutes to the 1,000 m car park; returns from the car park from 9:35 to 18:15. Fare: €3.80 each way buying on board, or €2.80 with an AC3 zone ticket bought beforehand at the station or online (unicocampania.it); the line is excluded from the transport covered by the Campania Artecard. In peak months the queue at the stop is long: arrive 20 minutes early.

By car

A3 motorway, Ercolano exit, then the Strada Provinciale Ercolano–Vesuvio. At the 1,000 m car park there is no parking: the parking areas along the provincial road are paid and run by the Municipality of Ercolano. The Park recommends paying for parking only after you’ve bought your Gran Cono ticket. On the final stretch in season you sit in traffic: train plus shuttle is often faster.

The climb: what to expect and how long it takes

From the 1,000 m car park trail no. 5, “Il Gran Cono”, starts: about 30 minutes uphill on lava gravel to the crater rim at 1,281 m, then a stretch along the edge with views into the mouth and, on clear days, over the whole bay, from Capri to Ischia. The upper route on the north and east flanks remains closed for safety.

Practical rules set by the Park: you walk keeping to the right, groups go up accompanied by a guide from the Presidio Permanente Vulcano Vesuvio, a safety service included in the ticket, and the visit must end within an hour of the last permitted access. Two hours round trip is enough for almost everyone; the loop route to the Rifugio Imbò brings the total to 3.

What to bring: closed shoes with a grippy sole (sandals fill up with lapilli), water, hat and sunscreen from April to October, a windproof jacket always: at the top it’s windy even in July. There are no public toilets at the car park, according to the Park’s notice; the bar up there charges.

When to go: seasonal hours, weather, crowds

Weather. Under an orange or red weather alert from the Campania Civil Protection, the ticketing and the trail close automatically. In strong wind or low cloud the Park can suspend access even without an alert: before setting off, check the notices section of the Park’s official website. If the crater is in the cloud, you’ll see nothing from the rim: postpone, if you can.

Crowds. The cap is 60 people every 10 minutes, so the trail is never crammed; the real queue is for the shuttle and at the gates between 10 and 1 pm. The 9:00–9:30 slots and those in the last hour before closing are the quietest, with the best light.

Tickets and time slots: official versus partners

Official channel. The Vesuvius National Park sells exclusively at vesuviopark.vivaticket.it: 50 tickets every 10 minutes, on sale 30 days in advance. The price is €10 full and €8 reduced (under 25 and residents of the Park’s 13 municipalities), free under 6; with booking fees the Park’s website quotes €11.68 full and €9.55 reduced. You need a credit card and to register with the visitors’ details; for refund conditions in case of closure, the platform’s terms apply.

Last minute. 20% of daily places are reserved for last minute: 10 tickets per slot, released 30 minutes before the time and purchasable only by connecting to the wifi near the entrance, maximum 5 per email address, issued in your name. Useful if you’re already up there; don’t count on it in high season.

Partners. The tickets sold by the platforms (€16 on GetYourGuide and Tiqets, checked regularly) are the same timed entry bought by the reseller, with a digital or audio guide added. You pay about €4 more to book in your own language with free cancellation: it makes sense when the slots you need are sold out on Vivaticket, because resellers have their own allocations. There is no “skip the line” at Vesuvius: the queue at the gate is the same for everyone.

Transfers and tours from Naples

If you don’t want to make any changes, the transfer with entrance ticket picks you up in Naples at a fixed time, takes you to the 1,000 m car park and brings you back: from €33.15 to €39.90 depending on the platform, 3 hours in total. The version from Ercolano with Vesuvio Express and entry (€30 on the official shop, €31 on Tiqets) is convenient if you’re staying along the Circumvesuviana line.

Mistakes to avoid on Vesuvius

• Buying from unauthorised resellers. The Park warns that vesuviopark.vivaticket.it is the only official seller; the partners mentioned here resell regular entries, but be wary of “open” tickets with no date and time.
• Paying for parking before the ticket. If the slot is sold out, the parking space along the provincial road is no use to you: Gran Cono first, then the rest.
• Arriving at the top at the last minute. The 120-minute flexibility doesn’t extend beyond the last access time: with the 14:50 slot in February, at 15:01 the gate is closed.
• Sandals, flip-flops, pushchairs. Lava gravel gets in everywhere and a pushchair won’t make it up: closed shoes and a child carrier backpack.
• Going up with cloud on the summit. The ticket can’t be moved at will: if the peak is covered in the morning and your dates are flexible, hold off buying until the day before, when the forecast is reliable.
• Underestimating water. There are no public facilities at the car park and the only bar is up top: a one-litre bottle each in summer.

Pompeii and Vesuvius on the same day

It’s the best-selling combination from Naples and it works: Pompeii in the morning, three hours with a guide, then the bus to the 1,000 m car park and the crater in the afternoon, back around 5–6 pm. Combined tours start at €48.75 with lunch and go up to €88–92 for versions with an exclusive guide.

Doing it yourself is feasible with EAV bus 808 from Villa dei Misteri, but you have to fit together three schedules (train, bus, crater slot) and in summer the afternoon up there is hot. Costs and cross-referenced timetables are on the page Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day.

What to combine with Vesuvius

• Herculaneum: you’re already at the right station. Ruins first thing in the morning (opens 8:30), shuttle to the crater at midday. Two sites, a single Circumvesuviana ticket.
• Pompeii: with bus 808, as above; or the next day, at a relaxed pace.
• MANN: the National Archaeological Museum in Naples holds the frescoes and casts from the cities buried by the volcano; it makes sense of what you saw from the rim.
• Campania Artecard: the pass covers state sites such as Pompeii and Herculaneum, but not the Gran Cono: the pass’s official website warns that crater access with the Artecard is suspended, and the EAV Pompeii–Vesuvius bus is also excluded from the included transport. In short: Vesuvius from Naples without surprises

Book the Gran Cono slot before anything else, choose the 9 o’clock slot or the last available one, bring closed shoes and water. With the Circumvesuviana and the shuttle, Vesuvius from Naples costs about €30 per person and takes half a day; with a transfer or a tour you spend €33 to €41 and have nothing to think about.
