Campania Artecard: is it actually worth it? The sums with official prices

The Campania Artecard is the Region’s official pass (managed by Scabec) combining entries to state museums and, in two versions, the public transport of the Unico Campania consortium. The right question isn’t “how much do I save” but “how many included sites will I really visit in 3 or 7 days”: the logic is the first entries free, the following ones reduced by up to 50%, and the sites worth the most (Pompeii €20, MANN €20, Royal Palace of Caserta €18, Herculaneum €16) are precisely the ones included. The Campania Artecard versions and current prices

According to the official website (campaniartecard.it), prices in force since 30 November 2023:

The 3 and 7-day passes are digital: you buy them online, in the app or at the Artecard Points (in Naples there’s the Infopoint at Piazza del Gesù 7) and activate them yourself on first use. The 365 versions are designed for residents and for anyone returning several times a year.

What it includes: the sites that weigh on the sums

The full list is long (more than 80 places across the region), but for a visitor using Naples as a base the sites that matter are few and expensive. All the official prices below are checked regularly on the individual museums’ websites.

Two details that change the sums. At Pompeii the Artecard includes the Pompeii Express ticket, i.e. the ancient city: the suburban villas route (Villa of the Mysteries and Villa of Diomedes) is added with an €8 supplementary ticket at the Porta Ercolano gate. You enter through the Piazza Esedra entrance, reserved for Artecard holders and groups, without booking a time slot: you show ID and collect your named ticket. At the MANN, once the free entries are used up, Artecard holders pay the “special” €10 ticket instead of €20. For the Campi Flegrei (Baia Museum, Baths of Baia, Cumae, Flavian Amphitheatre) you need to book a free Artecard ticket on the Musei Italiani app.

What it does NOT include (and what many take for granted)

• Sansevero Chapel and the Veiled Christ: a private museum, outside the circuit. Official ticket €12 with mandatory booking (museosansevero.it), see the page on the Sansevero Chapel.
• Napoli Sotterranea (Piazza San Gaetano), the Spanish Quarter underground (LAES) and most of the private routes: not included. Only the Galleria Borbonica and the Catacombs of San Gennaro and San Gaudioso entitle you to a reduction, not free entry (rule in force since 1 January 2023). • Santa Chiara complex: since 1 August 2023 not accessible with Artecard passes.
• Gran Cono of Vesuvius: the official website lists access as “currently suspended” for Artecard holders; the National Park ticket (€10 full, €8 reduced, plus online booking fee) can only be bought on vesuviopark.vivaticket.it. See the page on Vesuvius.
• Blue Grotto, ferries to the islands, SITA buses to Positano and Amalfi, Alibus, Campania Express: never included.
• Free Sundays: on days when entry is free for everyone (the first Sunday of the month and ministerial open days) the pass gives no skip-the-line access.

How it works: activation, days, reduced entries

The 3-day pass starts when you activate it (“Attiva” button in the app or your account) at the first gate or ticket office, and is valid for calendar days, not 72 hours: activated on Monday at 11am, it expires on Wednesday at 11:59pm. So activate it early on the morning of your first full day, not on the evening you arrive. After activation two separate QR codes appear, one for the transport gates and one to show at museums; the timer doesn’t pause.

You choose the free entries from the sites on the list: with the Campania 3 days they’re the first 2 you visit, with the 7 days the first 5, with the Napoli 3 days the first 3. From the next one on you pay the reduced rate, which for state sites is generally 50% and at the MANN is the special €10 fare. The strategy is simple: use the free entries on the most expensive sites (Pompeii and the MANN, or Pompeii and Caserta) and the reductions on the minor ones.

Transport in the 3-day versions covers metro Lines 1 and 2, buses, trams, funiculars, Cumana, Circumflegrea and the Circumvesuviana, so the train to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Sorrento is already paid for. The website specifies that use of public transport is limited to reaching Artecard sites, but at the gates the QR code works like a Unico Campania season ticket. Excluded: Alibus, Campania Express, SITA Sud for the Amalfi Coast, EAV Pompeii–Vesuvius buses.

The sums: when the Campania Artecard is worth it

Reference official prices: Pompeii €20, MANN €20, Herculaneum €16, Royal Palace of Caserta €18, Royal Palace of Naples €15. Transport: urban integrated day pass €5.40 (anm.it), Circumvesuviana Naples–Pompeii €3.30 each way, Naples–Herculaneum €2.60, regional train Naples–Caserta €4 (Unico Campania fare table).

Campania Artecard 3 days, €41 — the typical long-weekend case

A saving of around €35, and you keep the freedom to add the Royal Palace or Capodimonte at half price. Even the minimum programme “Pompeii + MANN + metro for 3 days” (€20 + €20 + €6.60 + €16.20 = €62.80) beats the pass’s €41.

Napoli Artecard 3 days, €27 — city only. MANN €20 + Royal Palace €15 already make €35 without counting transport (€16.20 with three day passes): with two museums and the metro the pass pays for itself; with a single museum it doesn’t. It doesn’t include Pompeii: if you’re going to the excavations, the Campania 3 days costs €14 more and gives you Pompeii (€20) and the train (€6.60).

Campania Artecard 7 days, €43 — the best entries-to-price ratio, without transport. Five entries: Pompeii €20 + MANN €20 + Caserta €18 + Herculaneum €16 + Royal Palace €15 = €89 against €43. Even with three sites (Pompeii + MANN + Caserta = €58) you’re ahead. Transport aside: for 7 days it’s still better to buy individual tickets (the integrated weekly pass costs €16).

365 Lite, €26: one entry a year at 34 sites, including Pompeii, Herculaneum, the MANN, Caserta, Paestum. Pompeii + MANN alone are worth €40. It’s the pass for anyone living in Campania or coming back twice in the year, and it has no transport. 365 Gold, €50: two entries a year per site and reductions on the second list.

When it’s not worth it

• You’re 18–25 and an EU citizen: at state sites you pay €2, so the pass is only useful for transport (see the FAQ).
• You’re under 18: state entries are free, a transport day pass is all you need.
• You’re doing Pompeii + Capri or Pompeii + the Amalfi Coast: only one included site, the rest is ferries and tours that aren’t covered. Better the single ticket, see the pages on Pompeii and Capri.
• You want Sansevero, Napoli Sotterranea and the Catacombs: these are precisely the three sites the pass doesn’t cover, or covers only with a reduction.
• You arrive on the first Sunday of the month: state sites are free and the pass doesn’t skip the queue.

Where to buy it: official website, app or partners

The price is the same on the official website and on the partners; what changes is how you receive the pass. On the Artecard website and app the digital pass arrives in your account (sometimes within ten minutes or so) and is ready to activate. On the partners you receive a voucher to convert into the Artecard pass following the emailed instructions: convenient if you want to pay on a single platform together with your other tickets and have a clear cancellation policy (check it on the listing), less convenient if you buy in the evening to use it the next morning. The alternatives: city passes and the “Vesuvius, Herculaneum and Pompeii” pass

Alongside the Artecard there are private passes sold only online. The 3-day “attractions and public transport” pass from €28 and the Naples City Card from €72 work with an app and their own list of attractions: before buying, compare the list with what you actually want to see, because the state sites worth the most (Pompeii, MANN, Caserta) are already in the official €41 Artecard. The Naples Pass 7 days from €163 promises more than 45 attractions plus transport: it only pays off with a very packed programme (Pompeii + Herculaneum + MANN + Caserta + Royal Palace are worth €89, plus about €16 of weekly transport).

The Vesuvius, Herculaneum and Pompeii Pass from €72.50 needs to be read with the official prices in hand: Vesuvius €10 (+ booking fee) + Herculaneum €16 + Pompeii €20 = about €46 in individual tickets. The difference pays for digital guides and a single booking, not for the entry: if your goal is to spend less, the three official tickets cost less, and with the Campania 7 days (€43) Pompeii and Herculaneum are already included.

How to use it well in 3 days: an example

Day 1, activation at 8:30am at the metro gate: the MANN in the morning (1st free entry), the Royal Palace in the afternoon (reduced) with metro Line 1 between Museo and Municipio. Day 2: Circumvesuviana from Porta Nolana to Pompeii (2nd free entry, entrance from Piazza Esedra), back in the afternoon and a possible stop at Herculaneum on day 3 with the reduction. In short

The Campania Artecard is worth it for anyone entering at least two expensive state sites in three days (Pompeii, MANN, Herculaneum, Caserta) and getting around by public transport: the €41 Campania 3-day version saves €20–35 on the classic programme. The €43 7-day version is the best value on entries, but has no transport. It isn’t worth it for young EU citizens, under-18s and anyone focused on Sansevero, the underground sites and the islands.
