Tickets in Naples: official prices, partner prices and how skip-the-line really works

Tickets in Naples fall into three families: the state sites (Pompeii, Herculaneum, MANN, Royal Palace of Caserta, Royal Palace of Naples) with fixed prices, statutory reductions and official online advance sales; the private museums with limited numbers (Sansevero Chapel, Catacombs of San Gennaro, Napoli Sotterranea) where the problem isn’t the price but finding a place; and the tickets with a service sold by the partners, which add an audio guide, a guide or transport to the same entry. Knowing which family an attraction belongs to tells you straight away where to buy. Official prices checked regularly on the individual museums’ websites; partner prices checked regularly (per person, the lowest available).

Quick read. Where the partner costs the same (Catacombs, Alibus, Campania Express) choose on booking convenience. Where it costs €3–6 more (Pompeii, Herculaneum, MANN, Caserta) you’re paying for the audio guide or the guide: worth it if you don’t have one of your own. How “skip-the-line” really works in Naples

The words “skip-the-line” on the booking sites cover three different situations, and knowing them stops you paying for something you already have.

State sites with gates (Pompeii, Herculaneum, MANN, Caserta, Royal Palace). The queue you skip is the one at the ticket desk. Any ticket bought online, official or partner, arrives as a PDF with a QR code and takes you straight to the gates: at Pompeii the Porta Marina, Piazza Anfiteatro and Piazza Esedra entrances. The partner ticket does not get you in ahead of the official one. At Pompeii the ticket is named (ID required), there’s a cap of 20,000 visitors a day and from 16 March to 14 October two slots: 9am–1pm (15,000 entries) and 1pm–5:30pm (5,000). On July and August mornings and over long weekends the morning slot can sell out: buy a few days ahead.

Limited-number museums with slots (Sansevero Chapel, Gran Cono of Vesuvius). Here there’s no queue: without a booking you don’t get in. At the Sansevero Chapel official tickets are released 60 days ahead and a second batch 2 days before the date; in spring, at Easter, over long weekends and in December the central slots run out days in advance. The partner guided tours have their own bookings and often remain available when the official calendar is full: they cost €14–20 against €12 + €3.50 for the audio guide, so the real difference is a few euros. Closed on Tuesdays, last entry at 6:30pm. At Vesuvius sales are exclusively online on Vivaticket: 50 tickets every 10 minutes, on sale 30 days ahead, plus 10 “last minute” tickets per slot unlocked half an hour beforehand and purchasable only via the wifi at the trail entrance, maximum 5 per email address, named tickets. The partner products with a shuttle include the crater ticket and solve the transport, which is the complicated part.

Private guided routes (Napoli Sotterranea, Galleria Borbonica, Catacombs, LAES). You only enter with a guide, at fixed times. At Napoli Sotterranea departures in Italian and English run every hour from 10am to 6pm (Thursdays also at 9pm by reservation with a minimum of 10 people), entry is guaranteed to anyone who queues, the wait ranges from 10 to 90 minutes at peak times and the official “skip-the-line” ticket carries a supplement. At the Catacombs of San Gennaro the guided visit leaves every hour from 10am to 5pm, booking always mandatory, closed on Wednesdays; the partner sells the same tour at €13. The Spanish Quarter underground tour (LAES) leaves from the Gambrinus café in Piazza Trieste e Trento on weekdays at 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4:30pm, on Sundays and holidays also at 11am and 6pm, with mandatory booking. The slots that sell out: booking calendar

Reductions and free entry: when the official site always beats the partner

At the state sites the Ministry of Culture rules apply: free under 18, €2 for EU citizens aged 18 to 25 (not yet 25) with ID, free for tenured teachers and people with disabilities. This applies at Pompeii, Herculaneum, the MANN, the Royal Palace of Caserta, the Royal Palace of Naples and Paestum. Partner tickets are almost always full price or with a “reduced” rate that doesn’t come down to €2: a family with two children aged 16 and 20 pays €42 at Pompeii on the official site (20 + 20 + 0 + 2) against at least €80 on the partner. Rule: with under-18s or EU under-25s, buy official and add a separate guide if you need one.

At the private museums the reductions are their own. Sansevero Chapel: €8 from 18 to 26, €6 from 10 to 17, free up to 9, €8 also for FAI members. Catacombs of San Gennaro: €6 under 18, €9 students and over 65s, free under 6. Vesuvius: €8 under 25 and for residents of the Park’s municipalities. Here too the partners rarely differentiate by age.

First Sunday of the month: free entry at the state sites, with no advance sales and a ticket to collect at the desk. You only benefit if you accept the queue; the Artecard doesn’t skip the line on those days and at the MANN three sections stay closed. Herculaneum is also free on 25 April, 2 June and 4 November; the MANN is free for women on 8 March.

Where the partner adds value (and where it doesn’t)

It adds value when it solves a logistical problem: the shuttle to Vesuvius (no convenient public transport from the car park at 1,000 m), the coach from Naples to Caserta if you don’t want the regional train, the guided tour of Pompeii for anyone visiting once in a lifetime who doesn’t want to wander 66 hectares at random, the place at the Sansevero Chapel when the official site is full. It adds little when it sells the same QR code as the official site with a “priority” that doesn’t exist: at Herculaneum, the MANN and Caserta the €19.50–24 partner ticket is convenient, not faster.

Always check three things on the partner listing: what’s included (an audio guide on the app or a flesh-and-blood guide), the meeting point (the exact meeting point is on the voucher) and the cancellation policy, which on dated tickets can be stricter than on tours.

Passes and combinations: when to stop buying single tickets

If in three days you do Pompeii, the MANN and Herculaneum by public transport, the single tickets cost €56 plus about €28 in transport; the 3-day Campania Artecard costs €41 and includes two entries and all the trains. Buy official for the state sites if you qualify for age reductions or don’t need a guide; buy from the partner when it adds an audio guide, transport or a place the official site no longer has; book Sansevero, Vesuvius and the Pompeii morning slot in advance.
