Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day: it can be done, here’s how

Pompeii and Vesuvius in one day is the classic outing from Naples and it works, on one condition: you respect the order and the time slots. You visit the ruins in the morning, when the turnstiles open at 9 and you have three hours before the crush; you do the crater in the early afternoon, with a timed ticket bought in advance. On your own you spend about €44 per person and are out for 9–10 hours; with a combined tour from Naples you start at €48.75 and are back in 7–8 hours, with coach, tickets and guide already taken care of.

The choice depends on how much your planning time is worth and on when you’re travelling. From June to September the midday Gran Cono tickets disappear days in advance and tour operators have reserved channels; in April, May and October doing it yourself is easy and costs half as much. The order of the day: Pompeii first, then the crater

The reason is practical. Pompeii has a cap of 20,000 entries per day and, from 16 March to 14 October, 15,000 places in the 9–1 pm slot against 5,000 in the 1 pm–5:30 pm slot: in the morning you get in without trouble, and between 9 and 10:30 you have the Forum almost to yourself. The Gran Cono, on the other hand, accepts entries until 5 pm in April–June and September, until 6 pm in July and August, and until 4 pm in March and October; in the afternoon the air over the bay is cleaner and the sun is behind you for photos towards Naples.

With an organised tour the order is often the same but compressed: coach at 8–8:30 from the centre, two guided hours at Pompeii, lunch, climb up Vesuvius, back between 4:30 and 6 pm. Some operators reverse it (Vesuvius in the morning) in the hot months to avoid the midday sun on the crater: you’ll find this stated in the product description.

Do it yourself: Circumvesuviana + EAV bus 808 (or Vesuvio Express)

Leg 1: Naples–Pompeii by train

Circumvesuviana Naples–Sorrento line from Porta Nolana or Garibaldi, Pompei Scavi–Villa dei Misteri stop: €3.30 each way (Unico Campania NA3 zone), 32–40 minutes, a DD train every 36 minutes. The Campania Express (€15 each way, €25 return, reserved seat) is the comfortable alternative at 8:22 from Porta Nolana, but EAV has currently suspended it until further notice: while the suspension lasts, count only on the ordinary trains.

Leg 2: Pompeii–Vesuvius on EAV bus line 808

The EAV timetable in force has 11 departures a day between Pompeii and the car park at 1,000 metres on Vesuvius, every day. The useful stops are Pompei Piazza Anfiteatro (terminus) and Pompei Villa dei Misteri, in front of the Circumvesuviana station; the bus climbs via Torre del Greco and the Vesuvius Observatory and takes 50 minutes.

Line 808 has its own fare, excluded from passes and from the Campania Artecard: according to Unico Campania (the “Unico Vesuvio” page), the Pompeii–Vesuvius ticket costs €3.80 each way bought on board, or €2.80 with an AC3 zone ticket bought beforehand at the station, at retailers or online. Either way the bus costs a fraction of any private shuttle. The limitation is frequency: if you miss the 13:05 the next one is at 13:35, and the Gran Cono slot allows at most 120 minutes of flexibility around the time printed on the ticket.

Safety rule: choose a crater time slot at least an hour after the bus’s scheduled arrival. The Park lets you in from 120 minutes before to 120 minutes after the time on your ticket, so with the 15:00 slot and a bus arriving at 13:55 you’re covered even if the 808 runs late.

Variant from Herculaneum: Vesuvio Express

The volcano’s other gateway is Ercolano Scavi, 20 minutes from Naples on the Naples–Poggiomarino line trains via Torre Annunziata. From the square outside the station the Vesuvio Express departs, a private shuttle that climbs to 1,000 metres in 30 minutes; in summer it runs from 9 to 5 pm, in winter from 9:30 to 2 pm. The shuttle alone, return, without the crater ticket, costs €12 on promotion (€15 full price) on the official Regiondo shop at vesuvioexpress.it; the shuttle + crater ticket package costs €30 on the official shop and €31 via Tiqets.

This variant makes sense if you want Vesuvius in the morning and Pompeii in the afternoon: the 8:14 train from Porta Nolana, Ercolano Scavi at 8:34, the 9 o’clock shuttle, the crater by 10, back in Ercolano at 11:30, train to Pompeii with a change at Torre Annunziata and entry to Pompeii around 1 pm, in the quieter afternoon slot. Leg 3: the Gran Cono trail

From the car park at 1,000 metres to the crater rim, trail no. 5 climbs for about 30 minutes over gravel and ash, with a steady gradient and no shade. At the top you walk part of the rim with views into the crater (fumaroles included) and over the bay from Sorrento to Capo Miseno. You come down in 20 minutes. Walking sticks for hire and kiosks at the car park; no public toilets and no parking at the car park, according to the Park’s notice. Closed shoes, a litre of water each, a windproof jacket even in August: at 1,200 metres there’s always a wind.

Tickets: two bookings, two different sets of rules

Pompeii (according to the official website pompeiisites.org): Pompei express €20, Pompei+ with the Villa dei Misteri €25, reduced for EU citizens aged 18–25 €2, issued in your name, bought online on Vivaticket or at the ticket offices inside the entrances. Open 9–7 pm from 16 March to 14 October (last entry 5:30 pm), 9–5 pm in winter; closed 25 December and 1 January; free on the first Sunday of the month.

Vesuvius Gran Cono (according to the Vesuvius National Park): ticket online only at vesuviopark.vivaticket.it, €10 full price plus booking fee (€11.68 at online checkout), €8 reduced for under-25s (€9.55 online), free under 6. For each day, 50 tickets every 10 minutes go on sale 30 days in advance; once those are gone, 10 “last-minute” tickets per slot remain, which can be bought only via the wifi network near the entrance, 30 minutes before the slot, in your name. Crater access hours: 9–5 pm from April to June and in September, 9–6 pm in July and August, 9–4 pm in March and October, 9–3 pm from November to February; the visit must end within an hour of the last entry.

The trail closes automatically under an orange or red Civil Protection weather alert and in strong wind; tickets for closed slots are refunded without having to ask. If the sky is overcast below 1,000 metres, don’t go up: from the crater you’ll see nothing but fog.

Combined tickets and “skip the line”

There is no official combined Pompeii + Vesuvius ticket: they are two different bodies. The passes sold by the platforms (Pompeii + Herculaneum + Vesuvius from €72.50 with shuttle) sort out the bookings in one purchase, but read carefully what they include: some cover the transfer only between Pompeii and Vesuvius, not from Naples. With the Campania Artecard Pompeii is among the included sites, the Gran Cono is not.

The combined tours from Naples: what they add and what they cost

The “Pompeii and Vesuvius” products from Naples fall into three price bands (prices checked regularly):

• Shuttle + priority tickets, no guide (€51, 7 hours): coach from the centre, entry to Pompeii and the crater already booked, free time at both sites. It’s the cheapest way to have the timings sorted while staying independent inside the ruins.
• Tour with guide and lunch (€48.75–62, 7–8 hours): two-hour guided visit of Pompeii, lunch at a restaurant or farm on Vesuvius (pizza or a light menu, wine included in some), climb to the crater. The €48.75 product has more than 8,800 reviews: it’s the best seller in the category and often the best value overall.
• Premium tour with archaeologist, small group (€88–115, 8 hours): archaeologist guide at Pompeii, groups of 15 or fewer, traditional lunch, choice between the crater and the lava trails. Worth it if you want a “real” tour and not an outing with a hostess.

What the tours really add over doing it yourself is risk management: if the crater closes because of wind, the operator offers an alternative (Herculaneum, a winery, the lower trails of the Park) and doesn’t leave you at Pompeii with a ticket to claim back. For those who want a proper lunch, the variant with pizza at a restaurant on the slopes of the volcano costs €62 for 7.5 hours; it’s the right choice for families, because a sit-down lunch breaks up the day.

Time, effort, children: who is best served by what

The combined day is a 15,000-step affair, 3 km inside Pompeii plus 3 km of trail on Vesuvius with 200 metres of climb. Children aged 7–8 and up cope well, as does anyone who can walk for an hour without trouble; with a pushchair the crater is out (the trail is gravel) and Pompeii can only be done on the “Pompei per tutti” route from Piazza Anfiteatro. In that case it’s better to split them: Pompeii one day, Vesuvius another with the dedicated excursion.

In summer leave early and bring twice the water you think you’ll need. From November to February the crater closes at 3 pm and Pompeii at 5 pm: the DIY combination gets tight, and a tour leaving at 8 is the safer choice. For the month-by-month picture read when to visit Naples.

Alternatives: Herculaneum instead of Pompeii, or all three

If you’ve already seen Pompeii or want fewer crowds, swap it for Herculaneum: a smaller, better-preserved site, 20 minutes from Naples and with the Vesuvius shuttle right outside the station. Book the Gran Cono for 15:00 and Pompeii for 9:00, take the 8:05 Circumvesuviana, leave the ruins at 12:15, catch the 13:05 bus 808, do the crater at 14:30, and get back to Naples by 6:30 pm. Cost €44 per person with official tickets; if one link fails there’s always a later bus and two hours of flexibility on the crater.
